I bought this to play DVD’s, CD’s,and vhs tapes…It does these things
flawlessly. It has NO tuner (clearly stated) but it will accept tuner input from another source, or even home video or other vhs tapes for
recording on the vhs tape player, also home videos from the included DVD player could be recorded on vhs…unbelievable bargain for all these features. It is a terrific back-up unit in case your main, many featured, higher quality player-recorder fails and has to be returned for service. I have “2″ of them.

best knife you can buy

ive used this knife for 2 years now and it has never dissapointed me. i love how it feels in your hand, how it cuts, and the size and looks of it. i go primitive camping twice a week for 3 years now and this is the only knife i take with me. i dig holes for fire pits or number 2 if you know what i mean, i have opened countless cans with this knife and have split wood via batoning hundredes of times.this is hands down the strongest knife out there. the sheath is perfect. its so hard to find a sheath that matches the quality of the knife going in it, but this one is! the knife fits perfectly and doesnt wobble around. it has both a snap and velcro so you know the knife will not fall out. the blade is also very easy to get out of the sheath. this is good if you need to get it out in a emergency. it also has an outside pouch with a velcro flap. you can put alot of useful things in there such as a folding knife, multitool, sharpener, lighter, firesteel or even a compass. i personaly carry a bic lighter and a smiths sharpener.the items in there will not fall out by accident either.the handle is made of a very hard plastic that is very comfortable. dont be afriad to use the handle to bang in tent spikes. it does that very well. the knife is also easy to sharpen and holds its edge well. the tip looks delicate but is very strong. you can hammer the knife tip into a tree about an inch or so, then step on it and the tip will not break! i have tried this, and frequently try to break the knife and cant. you will not be dissapointed with this perchase and the price shown here is by far the best around. i also have given this knife to 2 marines i know who went to iraq. both loved them and are very proud sog owners.

Nice Camera, but I want more

I bought this camera from Circuit City on the day I was to fly out on a 2 week vacation. I have a Sony HI8, but I wanted a better quality camera to archive my children’s activities.

Overall, the camcorder is light, highly functional, and meets my expectations. However, I will probably return the camera. I’ll go through my pros and cons:

Pros:

Lightweight
5.1 sound is great
still pictures are nice, but don’t use the zoom. Zoom stills are grainy
touchscreen lcd is nice and intuitive.
Quick power on is a nice feature.

Cons:
The required codec to play the files are tough to comeby. I found that Cyberlink’s PowerDVD Deluxe is the only 3rd party application to play these files.
The included software is very basic and proprietary. It doesn’t share the codec with media player.
The 40gig harddrive is not sufficient for the HD recordings set at the highest resolution. Why would you get an HD camera and record at low res?
I used my laptop to download. Later, I found trying to play those downloaded files to be a pain.
Focus in low light conditions is poor. I found myself zooming in and out to try and get the auto focus to work properly. Looks like the SR11 has a manual focus knob.
The videos, although much better than SD, are not sharp and realistic like HD TV. The colors are dull and the details are not eyepopping.
Battery life: I bought the 5 hour battery and I got 1:30 life day after day.
No neck strap, but big deal.
The menus were not intuitive. Too many choices and screens.

All in all, for a $1000 investment, I didn’t feel I got the best value. I am not looking at a Cannon HG10, but I wonder how the still pictures are?

Honest Opinion: they seem to work for mice

My story is this: Got some mice in the house at the start of the winter. Little poops all over, chewed cereal bars in the closet/cupboard, mice in the trash can etc. Laid out traps and caught four of them but still had: little poops all over, chewed cereal bars in the closet/cupboard, mice in the trash can etc. So I brought two of these units. At first I put them both in the basement where I had actually seen the little critters (I have a pretty big house) and I didn’t see any evidence of them in the basement after two days or so but upstairs it was still: little poops all over, chewed cereal bars in the closet/cupboard, mice in the trash can etc. So I moved the “pest repellers” upstairs and put all my food items in plastic containers. I saw some evidence of a mouse in the trash the first morning but since then, nothing. I don’t know if it was me storing the food better, the pest repellers or both but I have seen nothing. I have been moving these things around the house every other day or so and they seem to work for me. I would give the unit five stars but they do have one draw back, they do make noise. If you expect these things to be quiet your in trouble, they chirp. It’s not too loud and doesn’t bother our dog or us but it does make noise. For me the chirping is a small price to pay to get rid of the mice.

Bear with me.

We bought this little bear to help me keep up with my little guy at Disney. We could use it on the days he wore shorts with cargo pockets. On the days he didn’t have cargo pockets, we had to leave little bear at home. Bear is kind of bulky and while the idea is good, the mounting system is not so good. You have to make sure your child is wearing shoes with shoe strings or shorts with a belt or big pockets. Can’t wear crocs and the bear–or velcro shoes. The beeping sound is not as annoying as I wish it would be. We heard a beeping sound but it sounded like a cell phone–my girls were pressing the button to annoy their brother (which didn’t even bother him). Would I buy again? I guess I would but would make sure to only pack cargo shorts or get some shoes that tie. If they made little bear smaller and more streamlined, I’d be even more likely to buy.

great computer if portability matters

I’ve always been a fan of ultraportable computers, and I’ve owned a few, which include a Motion LS800 tablet, Raon Everun, Vaio TX, Vaio TZ, and an Asus 1000H. So, my review is based upon my experience with those machines. The Vaio P, in my opinion, is the ideal combination of portability and functionality, if typing is an integral part of your computing needs. I bought 2 of them (one for me, one for the wife) as soon as they were announced on the Sony website, and have been using it for about 2 weeks.

PRO’S:

(1) SCREEN RESOLUTION: One issue that I have always had with any ultraportable (outside of the Vaio TX and TZ) has been low screen resolution (e.g. 1028 x 680), which has always lead to lots of scrolling and/or zooming-out. The resolution on the Vaio P is, in one word, incredible. EVERY webpage is viewable in its entirety on the screen, as is EVERY document I need to read or edit. The downside is that text ends up being VERY small on the screen, but still legible to me (I type documents in 10-pt Times New Roman font). However, there is a personalization option available that allows you to make text/icons 125% larger than normal, which makes things much easier to see. My wife wears glasses and has trouble reading the text at normal settings, so she uses that mode and it works well for her.

(2) PORTABILITY: Okay, let’s not kid ourselves here. This thing will NOT fit in your shirt/pants pocket (unless you’re wearing very baggy cargo pants), but it will fit in a purse or any small satchel. Weight is negligible, even with the extended-life battery attached. Portability is a big thing for me in my profession (medical student, MD in a few months), and this machine can easily fit in the pocket of my white coat when I’m on the move.

(3) THE KEYBOARD: I type extensively as part of my profession, and having a usable keyboard is a component that has always been missing from any computer that I could carry on my person. My Motion tablet and Everun were useful for reading on-the-go, but essentially useless for typing anything beyond a short phrase. My Vaio TX/TZ have great keyboards (I’ve typed thousands of pages on them), but the machines themselves are too large to carry on me at all times.

Let me also take this opportunity to point out that, in comparison to the Asus 1000H, the Vaio P is not just another crappy netbook. The keyboard on the 1000H, for many reasons, is a low-quality component that definitely shows with heavy use. Any typing mistakes made with the Vaio P are genuinely my own keystroke mistakes, which was not the case with the Asus (90% of the time, it was just the junky keyboard causing mistakes). The right-shift key on the Vaio P is truncated, but its placement to the left of the arrow keys makes it a much more natural motion to hit, and something that you can become accustomed to without causing you to alter your typing accuracy on a normal-sized keyboard, which was really just impossible with the 1000H (that had the right shift key placed to the right of the arrow keys).

(4) FUNCTIONALITY: It is a fully-functional PC, capable of running any program you might need to run, given that you’re not trying to use this as a gaming PC. I have installed Windows 7 on my Vaio P, which has made it much more efficient at running multiple programs simultaneously, as well as improving stability. I would highly recommend this upgrade for anyone purchasing this machine.

CONS:

(1) VISTA: This machine should have come standard with XP. Vista boot time is horrendously slow, even from hibernation, and installing Windows 7 does not fix this problem. My other ultraportables running XP were able to return from hibernation in about 20-60 seconds. The Vaio P takes probably 2-3 minutes. Maybe I’m a little impatient, but I want my computer to be ON when I turn it on. The integrated instant-on technology is not terribly useful to me because I generally need to use programs other than Media player or Firefox when I fire my machine up.

(2) NOT USER-UPGRADEABLE: As I understand it, the RAM is soldered to the motherboard and thus not upgradeable. 3 GB of RAM would have made the VAIO P much faster, and would have alleviated problem (1) I described above, and with 3 GB of RAM, Windows 7 would not even be a necessity because it would then be able to run Vista acceptably.

(3) STANDARD BATTERY LIFE: Sony touts 4 hours of life with the standard battery, which is of course a lie. It’s more like 2.5 to 3 hours with screen brightness turned down to 1 or 2 (at which it is still very much readable/viewable), with WiFi on. I also have the large capacity battery, which takes it to 6.5 to 7 hours at the same settings. The large capacity battery adds maybe 1 to 1.5 cm of height to the machine, which is something of an eyesore, but I will make the sacrifice because the added battery life is worth more to me than the 0.2 lbs (not noticeable) and increased size.

(4) LACK OF TOUCHPAD: This omission is well-documented in other reviews; the pointing stick does what it is intended to do and it does it well — however, it does NOT replace the touchpad or a mouse. Most people are already well-aware of this issue before purchasing the Vaio P. One thing I would liked to have seen instead is the optical mouse like on the Raon Everun, which is an intuitive and exceptional pointing device that is easier to use than the pointing stick.

*CONCLUSION: the Vaio P is an exceptional device of modern engineering that allows its owners to maintain productivity at a level comparable to that of a laptop while away from home, or when lugging a laptop case is impractical — thus, I must stress that it is intrinsically a COMPANION PC. One should not expect this to REPLACE a primary PC, nor should one anticipate using this as their laptop 100% of the time, 24/7, because it simply would be foolish and needlessly uncomfortable to do so. I would make the analogy of comparing WiFi to a T1 connection — given the choice and availability, no one would choose WiFi over a T1 connection, but the convenience and mobility of a WiFi connection are advantages that the T1 cannot match. In the same way, the Vaio P offers unmatched portability and convenience, but its purpose is of a different nature than the primary laptop/desktop — so, as long as you keep that difference in mind, the Vaio P should enhance your productivity and live up to its tag of being a “lifestyle” PC.

Mac Friendly!

I’m running a MacBook with Leopard (I bought the computer in Dec 2007) and this My Passport played nice. It is honestly plug-and-go, especially with Apple’s Time Machine software. Take this HD out of the box, plug it in the Mac and it will take care of the rest. It could not be easier to back up your computer.

USB cable is a bit short, if I’m looking for things to gripe about, but if you have a spare firewire/USB cable you’ll be fine.
